Letterboxd, Strava, Goodreads, Obscurify.. we keep track of nearly everything we read, watch, or do. hobbies have turned into accomplishments. how do we return to the essence of the hobby?
I say, use these apps if you want and it's fun to you. However, enjoying things privately and slowly doesn't mean you've enjoyed them any less. Also. sometimes limiting yourself a bit helps to actually remember and process what you've just watched/read. Not to mention that writing public comments and reviews might ultimately compromise your authenticity.
for sure! i’m also still using these apps because there’s definitely something to be enjoyed there. i also think that, like you say, it’s really about reflecting on something for yourself rather than for an audience or for social credit etc.
I can totally see how all of these tracking apps take the fun out of your hobbies. Really enjoyed your analysis on this and I think it is a really important topic to discuss!
I needed to read this. I super agree, reading now feels like a race of who can read 200 books per year or you failed as a reader. This also comes strictly inherited with consumerism, which is crazy. I just subscribed, excited to read more of you!
thank you so much for this comment! it really means a lot to hear that what i wrote resonates with you. consumerism will nottttt take our hobbies away from us :) it’s so crazy to think about the ways in which consumption has taken over so many aspects of our lives, but i really think awareness is step one in breaking away from this. can’t wait to cover similar things in the future because i think it’s way more all-encompassing than we think? anyway, thanks again <3
i just read your article! and thank you so much for this response it’s honestly amazing to hear from people that they recognize this themselves as well. it’s a constant struggle but i do genuinely believe it can be so worth it to take that step back and evaluate why we indulge in certain types of media and whether we’re truly doing it for ourselves! no more hustle culture ;)
